Creativity Call Out
At Bunyip, our retail shop ethos is all about finding the most exciting, contemporary products to sell to our customers – a happy, cool and colourful bunch who we know appreciate a trend-led craft treat. This can be fairly difficult in our industry, which is so traditional sometimes that we struggle to find the products of our dreams amongst the slightly old fashioned wares.
We’re lucky enough to be able to stock the shop from lots of different suppliers, many of them big companies that allow us to buy all sorts of wonderful things and keep our prices down on all your basic craft supplies. More often than not, we find that we can find trend led products from these companies, but it really is all about picking and choosing from vast catalogs that really vary in quality, price and style. These wholesalers have provided us with some of our favourite products of this year though, from cactus pin cushions to hummingbird cross stitches to spaceship fabric – we do our best to pick out the bits we think you’ll love!
But, what we absolutely love stocking is work from independent designers and artists. We still have the fabulous kits and wrapping paper designed by Freya Hartas, one time Bunyip employee who has now moved on to Bristol.
We also have a big selection of cards from The Strawberry Card Company, designed by Sian O’Donnell, a friend of Mattie’s and firm believer in the joy of receiving post. We love Sian’s work and keep expanding our card area to fit in all our favourites (if it has a swear word in it, it’s our favourite).
Never one to turn down a good button – and we know you aren’t either – we love having these gorgeous sea glass buttons in the shop, made by Sally Villa. Each set is unique, making them perfect as a gift for a button aficionado or even to be made into jewellery. They’re so precious and delicate that I think they’d be beautiful mixed in with other natural buttons on a necklace…
As part of our handmade jewellery selection we love these pieces made by Daisy Manson, all made from off cuts from the wood her brother uses to make guitars! Some of them are even inset with gorgeous mother of pearl shapes, making super special and one off necklaces and earrings.
We love stocking these makers and their awesome products, but we’d love even more! If you know of any fabulous designs or artists selling their crafty makes then pleased put them in touch with us – we’re always keen to have a look and expand our selection so that we keep bringing you wonderful stock that makes us all pretty happy. The best ways to get in touch are on email@example.com or 01392 437377, we’d love to hear about the products that have got you all excited!
How to: Vintage Leaf Festival Crown
Mattie came up with this design while trying to think of new and pretty ways to use our special leaf shaped beads that we obtained in a big haul of vintage stock a few years ago. As with all good ideas, this one involved a crown. Follow our instructions below to make your own beaded crown, sturdy enough to survive the entirety of festival season…
You will need: 0.6mm wire, vintage leaf beads, vintage pearl beads, 50cm ribbon. This can be done with any beads and ribbon of your choice – as long as their not too heavy to adorn your head all day! We use 0.6mm wire here because it was the thickest we could fit through our leaf beads, but 0.8mm is also great and a bit sturdier (if you can fit it through!)
1. Cut yourself a piece of wire 1 metre long.
2. Start threading your beads on – we threaded two leaves, followed by a pearl, and repeated this pattern.
3. Once it looks like it’s getting long enough, check it around your head for length. It should sit comfortably on your head like a crown, not fall down and into your eyes.
4. Where the two ends meet, wrap the wire around each other nice and neatly, and then trim down with a wire cutter so they’re not poking out.
5. Tie your piece of ribbon so it covers up your wire wrap.
6. Voila! Wear all day like a festival queen.
If you fancy giving this a go we’ve put together everything you need in a kit – and with 3 colours to choose from! Check it out by clicking here.

Our classic colour mix boxes are the perfect way to keep little (and big!) hands busy, especially when the inevitable rain hits. Filled with enough beads, thread and findings to whip up a few different pieces, these are perfect for crafty types who want to start designing. All hand packed in the shop, every single box is unique – so you get a different selection of loveliness every time! Buy them here.
For a super fast bit of easter fun, we’re feeling inspired by lovely paper bunting, easily created by cutting out egg shapes from colourful papers and stringing on to a pretty thread or ribbon. Try adding letters to for your own Easter message and hang up for all to see – lovely!
Over chocolate egg hunts? Go for something much more wonderful and hide a few of our ceramic bunnies around the place. Once found, they can be threaded onto something lovely (even just a pretty ribbon!) and will provide a much longer lasting treat.
These are also available exclusively in store with extra special heart adornment – pretty irresistible!
Pinterest is a never ending source of Easter fun, but this is one of our favourites – pom pom bunnies! Check out the tutorial here. Really straightforward to make out of a little wool, felt, nylon and beads, these could easily be whipped up in a whole host of colours. For even easier bunny creation, don’t forget we now stock the wonderful Multi Pom in store, for making lots of same size pom-poms at once! Can’t say better than that.
We’ll be hosting our monthly Creative Kids sessions in the shop on Saturday 19th March, with Jewellery Making between 10.30am and 12pm, and Sewing between 2pm and 3.30pm. Each session is £5, and includes all materials so your little one will head home with their make. In the afternoon we’ll be practising our cross stitching skills with these awesome bunny cut outs, and decoupaging some eggs! Give us a call at the shop on 01392 437377 to book, or just drop in on the day.
Have fun – and Happy Easter!
Introducing our newest jewellery making kit: the Pretty Jewellery Set!
This necklace & bracelet kit has been designed to fill the gap between our classic Kids Necklace/Bracelet Kits and our other range of making kits. For the age range who love to string beads and are capable of working with a slightly thinner thread and smaller bead size combination, Mattie had her almost 6 year old little girl in mind.
The kit is made up from a (obviously!) pretty selection of shiny 6mm plastic beads in either clear, pink or blue, and a beautiful rainbow selection of our crystal butterflies & shapes. These have already been attached to bails so no fiddly plier work, and you’ve got a sturdy cotton thread to string these on. Finished off with a chunky screw clasp to tie on so you can make it to any length you like and enough elastic to whip up a matching bracelet – we’re so pleased with this one!
Our kits come with full instructions to follow and so make an ideal gift for the budding jewellery making enthusiastic – no extra beads or tools are required, you get absolutely everything you need all packaged up beautifully.
You can grab one of these kits here. The difficult part is choosing which colour to start with…
